We grew up with heap and custom wooden composts, have only had this a week. We're positively surprised and find it very convenient for a small garden or even an apartment balcony. If a bit pricey, the quality feels adequate, the bin looks tidy and the small size is easy to store and very conveniently mobile. The bin is made of the synthetic fabric we know from fabric plant pots, which is dense, black and breathable. • Stands up, zip might rust It stands up on it's own even when empty and open – but we'd suggest an enclosed space or locking it down against tipping. It's a good size for shorter gardeners at very roughly 32" height x 19" diameter. The metal zipper has sleek looking, metal pull tabs, but might rust shut quickly outside. • Nice handles & PVC window, easy to mistake for opening Low-set handles make it easy to carry once it gets heavier. Very convenient when gathering leaves, just bring the compost bag over. We like the viewing window. It reaches almost half height and a hook-and-loop holds the rolled-up flap fixed, which is perfect for curious kids and adults alike. We wish it were easier to distinguish from the flap covering the opening for removing compost, which is situated on the other side… we'll add a pictogram using some acrylic paint. A strong hook-and-loop closure holds both openings shut tightly. • Moisture & temperature management, to be seen This is our first bag-type compost and we're unsure how moisture management will work in our hot and cold, dry, desert mountain climate. We add quite a bit of moisture to begin, such as we'd have naturally after a good rain. The black color fabric may help heat the wintertime compost if put in a sunny spot. We'll need to find a sheltered spot in the shade to avoid daytime heat in summertime. How helpful that this compost is so mobile! • How we compost, brown & green We eyeball alternating layers of "brown and green" to balance carbon rich with nitrogen rich materials. For example, browns may be dried leaves, wood chips or paper and cardboard (we avoid those). Greens are fresh cuttings or, in wintertime, aged manure and coffee grounds. We'll also use it for kitchen scraps; just avoid any cooked foods & wash eggshells to avoid animals scavenging, crush finely. Make sure to layer in browns and keep the density breathable. Please note we didn't crush our dried leaves, as it's mid winter and there are so few left. When crushed, they decompose a lot faster.

    This is perfect for just getting into to composting for gardening. It's light weight and low proce is perfect for my needs. Plenty of volume for a plant pot and planter grower for me. Combine this with an inexpensive wood chipper for branched and yoy have an amazing looking garden

    I’ve only just started filling this and I like that I can keep it on my back deck in the corner. BUT this thing does not contain smells so be prepared.

    Starting first compost ben . At least its getting the some of the food out of the trash and out of the house. It a good size. Very durability and sturdy, very stable, so far a good buy for the money.

    Compost bin didn't come with any paperwork or use suggestions. I can't find any, how to use or use suggestions here either. I know basic composting but should this bag stand in a sunny spot or will it work just as well in the shade?

    We had an outdoor compost system at our hold home. This one is a starter for us for our new home. This compost bin has a 34-gallon capacity. It holds quite a bit of compost. The material that the bin is made of is polyester. The shape of the bin is like a metal trash bin–a cylinder shape. It's not heavy at only 1.2 lbs. so you may want to stake it down if your area like ours gets super windy. The material is breathable and has windows on the bottom to allow us to look at how far along the compost pile is. It also allows us to retrieve soil out of the pile from the bottom when the time's right. It's got a handle on each side for easy transport. I like the top of the compost bin as it unzips easily to make a simple deposit. It is a good starter compost bin that's easy to use, has a good amount of sturdiness for what we need it for, and is a good value for the money.
